SUMMARY: The Director of the Junior Sailing Programoversees the QYC Junior Sailing Program and is responsible for every aspect ofthe Program's operation. The Director will create an environment for both staffand students that prioritizes safety, learning and embodies the Quissett YachtClub mission and values. This role is year-round with two distinct"modes""sailing season and off season. The sailing season is approximately 10weeks of full time, hands-on managerial and administrative focus, overseeingall aspects of the QYC Junior Sailing Program activities. The Director overseesall Program staff including Race Team coaches. Remote support of 5 - 10 hoursper month is provided in the off season, with work focused on adjustingcurriculum, planning for seasonal staffing, meeting with committees for theyacht club and preparing for the upcoming sailing season. The Director, inconsultation with the Chair of the JSPC, will drive overall QYC Junior SailingProgram strategy. GeneralResponsibilities: Workingwith the JSPC Chair to recruit and hire qualified instructors Planningwith the JSPC Chair for budgeting staffing and salary needs and operating costsof the Program, long term planning, curriculum and participation in regattas Reportingin writing to the JSPC and QYC Board of Director and attending scheduledmeetings, as needed Overseeingdaily operations of the Program including safety, staff training, quality ofinstruction, implementation of curriculum, supervision of behavior,communication with parents, record keeping and boat maintenance Overseeingthe de-rigging, hauling, inventory and storing of all sailboats, trailers andequipment at the end of the August session and the launching and preparation ofall equipment prior to the start of the Program in June Conductingexit interviews and preparing written performance evaluations for staffinstructors and coaches by September 1 Overseeing,and where necessary, developing and sending pre- and post-season communicationsto appropriate parties, to include, but not limited to; QYC Board, JSPC,students and parents of the Program Specific Duties andTasks: Safety Assuresimplementation of the Health/Safety & Emergency Policies & Proceduresand reviews them annually for any necessary adjustments Schedulespre-season safety/certification classes as needed, including First Aid and CPR Administersswimming tests on the first day of each session Conductsperiodic safety drills Ensurescompliance with all federal, state, and local regulations including CORI andSORI requirements Preparesand communicates written accident/incident reports Assuresthat safety boats are properly equipped with functioning safety equipment perthe QYC Safety & Emergency Policies & Procedures Management Actsas role model and assures implementation of Program standards of sportsmanlike,professional behavior - as well as drug, alcohol and tobacco use, dress andstudent relationships Advertisesthe Program registration including newspaper and Falmouth Public Schools fliersand other avenues, as appropriate Workswith coaches to set and communicate the regatta schedule"must be set andcommunicated by May 1 Overseethe launching, rigging and planning sessions the week prior to the start ofclass instruction, including but not limited to: o Reviewand practice of all Safety & Emergency Policies & Procedures with allinstructors o Reviewof and planning for the designed curriculum, policies and procedures with allinstructors o Pre-seasoninventory of all boats, gear, Sailing Room and First Aid supplies Withthe JSPC Chair, develops, maintains and annually reviews a comprehensivecurriculum for all levels and classes of the Program Monitorsthe Head Instructors' and race team Coaches' management of the Programcurriculum, including daily instructor assignments and daily review of lessonplans Ensuresthat there is a plan in place to monitor student progress and that the Head andSenior Instructors implement it Trainsinstructors and coaches and provides written performance evaluations twice persession (minimum), or as necessary Ensuresthat ALL instructors become proficient in handling all QYC vessels under allconditions, both in the harbor and on Buzzards Bay Notifiesstudent and parents regarding the Program schedule changes and special events Plans,manages and serves as Regatta Chair for the Quissett hosted Unkie regatta Plansand runs the July and August orientation and awards sessions and works withinstructors to determine recommended class placement of sailors at end ofseason Monitorsand assess condition of Optis, 420s, Bullseyes, docks, classroom facilities andany other necessary sailing gear on an ongoing basis and addresses needs asfollows: o Performsor coordinates repairs as appropriate o Ensureslogs are kept for boats repairs o Servesas primary liaison with QYC Fleet Captains regarding maintenance of QYCmotorized and sailing fleets Plansand manages the weekly preparation of boats and equipment to meet the needs ofclasses and race team travel to regattas Preparesand enforces checklist for instructors to use at the end of each day to ensurethat equipment is neatly stored and that all club areas used by the Program areclean Withthe race coaches, plans and organizes the Opti and 420 Race Teams'participation in and transportation to all regattas, including but not limitedto: o OptiRace Team designated QYC supported regattas - generally 2- 3 per season o 420Race Team designated QYC supported - generally 4 - 5 per season o Communicationwith parents, coaches and sailors regarding upcoming events and deadlines o Ensuringappropriate planning and communications are in place for the boat transport(either sailing or towing to the regatta), traveling sailors, parents, coachesand other support personnel and that the sailors have appropriate oversight andsupport when traveling Record Keeping Maintainsaccurate records for instructor attendance and payroll Organizesand assures that Instructors document student attendance records and dailylesson plans for all classes Organizesand addresses incident reports for equipment damage and breakages Assuresthat periodic written inventory checks are taken during the seasons and aredocumented pre- and post-season Workswith the Treasurer to review and approve Program expenditures andreimbursements Tracksenrollment percentages relative to Program capacity and budgeting expectations Prepares and delivers a report to the JSPC and flag officers summarizing the completed sailing season by Sept 1 Job Requirements 3 - 5 years of sailing program management and/or coaching/teaching experience Bachelor's degree preferred US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Instructor Level 1 Certification (Level 2 or 3 preferred) First Aid and CPR current certifications Administrative and interpersonal skills commensurate with a role that will interact with board members, parents and students on a daily basis Strong, demonstrated understanding of sail and power boating
