Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer Job ID 2021-1396 Category Administrative Type regular Location : Location US-MA-Woods Hole Job Summary Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution invites applications for our first--Chief Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Officer to join the Institution reporting to our President and Director. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, eligible for full benefits. WHOI's Chief Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Officer will take a leadership role and report directly to, and counsel, our President and Director in the design of a comprehensive diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy and implementation plan. This strategy will foster a culture of connection, community, and belonging across the Institution, ensure equitable systems, and help build a diverse workforce. The position will begin remotely due to the pandemic but will be located in Woods Hole, MA. In addition to working directly with the President and Director, the Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer will provide informed thought leadership and counsel to other members of Senior Administration, Staff Council, and WHOI's Board and Corporation. The candidate will also lead collaborative efforts with students, postdocs, and Academic Programs Office staff, as well as Human Resources, the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI), Workplace Climate Committee (WCC), and other committees and staff across the Institution to enact a DEI strategy that aligns with WHOI's mission and values.-- WHOI is seeking an individual with subject matter expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion with a demonstrated ability to lead effective organizational strategies and transformations. Experience working in a scientific research environment is especially welcome. The successful candidate will engage, influence, and work within our senior administrative leadership team and leaders of cross-functional teams, building strong relationships as a trusted leader and advisor to drive change. WHOI has initiated a strategic visioning process and this presents opportunities to engage staged DEI principles, goals, and metrics. This individual will partner with our recruitment teams to attract, retain, and engage a diverse and inclusive academic presence and workforce; strengthen our sense of belonging and community; and in doing so help create a research, education, and workplace climate where diversity is valued, recognized, respected, and welcomed. Essential Functions
        • Lead the development of a strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion plan across the organization, identifying key metrics and goals to measure progress.
        • Lead and champion an implementation plan, leveraging DEI focused committees and groups to maintain community engagement and momentum, including the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI); the Workplace Climate Committee (WCC); the Women's Committee; Gays, Lesbians, and Others in Woods Hole (GLOW); the Woods Hole Diversity Action Committee (DAC), and staff in the Academic Programs Office (APO) and Human Resources (HR) Departments.
        • Partner with recruitment committees for research and non-research positions, HR, and APO to evaluate and refine search, recruitment, and hiring practices at all levels to develop best and inclusive practices, including interviewing practices and attracting and building a pipeline for women and underrepresented groups as candidates for employment, and for educational opportunities.
        • Work with the WHOI Board and Corporation, HR, APO, and other internal groups to provide training and development related to diversity, equity, inclusive leadership, belonging, and anti-racism to the Board, students and postdocs, and employees.
        • As an individual contributor, serve as the DEI thought leader and influencer to distribute and reinforce accountability throughout all levels of the organization.
        • Partner with Department Chairs, HR, and APO to institute policies and practices that support a community and culture of inclusion where all people feel safe and are respected; build and maintain strong relationships and work in concert with members of WHOI's various internal employee resource groups leveraging their passion and interest in furthering WHOI's commitment to analyze and improve the organizational DEI climate.
        • Research, educate, and stay current with evolving DEI best practices, tracking and benchmarking WHOI's progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion against best-in-class organizations; prepare reports and communicate progress of plans to WHOI leadership and the WHOI community on a regular basis using data and metrics; and develop meaningful tools, guidelines, and analytics to measure and evaluate DEI performance and effectiveness over time, in order to enable leadership to leverage data to inspire action and drive strategic outcomes across the organization.
        • Partner with Department Chairs, HR, and APO to develop and build teams to deploy these tools and practices, and to carry out the work defined by these partnerships.
        • Build key external relationships with diverse professional, academic, cause-driven, and community organizations that focus on promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
        • Represent WHOI and be part of WHOI teams at local, regional, and national conferences and other DEI-related events.
        • Partner internally with Advancement (Communications and Development), APO, HR, and other departments to advise them on how to effectively use WHOI's social media, philanthropic activities, external website, external job postings, weekly Newsletter, internal intranet, internal newsletter (Headlines), and email announcements to demonstrate and promote DEI principles, activities, initiatives and messages. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
          • Performs other duties as deemed necessary. Education & Experience REQUIRED:
            • Bachelor's degree is required, and preferably in science, engineering, public policy, or psychology.
            • Deep understanding of and expertise in DEI, and knowledge of best practices and trends
            • Demonstrated success in leading, developing and executing DEI strategies, best practices and structural process improvements,--minimum of 5 years
            • Demonstrated success operationalizing DEI and leading projects within complex, decentralized environments
            • Demonstrated success working with cross-functional teams to develop goals, building metrics to monitor progress toward goals and building processes and practices to meet or exceed goals
            • Experience leading, building and developing high impact projects and teams
            • Ability to effectively build partnerships and influence stakeholders
            • Organizational skills with proven strategy and process management capabilities; ability to work on multiple key projects at one time
            • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to build and sustain positive relationships at all levels
            • Team-oriented, patient, consensus-builder who understands how to influence and achieve commitment from diverse constituencies and design solutions across a matrix management organization while building and maintaining enthusiasm
            • Excellent presentation skills and proven ability to collaborate and navigate all levels of the organization from the employee to the Board
            • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a metrics-driven approach to problem solving and the ability to leverage analytics and insights to create--compelling narratives for change and drive positive results
            • Comfortable and effective working with scientists and engineers DESIRED:--
              • Master's degree (preferably in science, engineering, public policy or psychology)
              • Experience in a scientific research and/or higher education environment
              • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion certifications
